Tinto de Verano (Summer Red Wine Cocktail)
Beat the heat the Spanish way—with a wine cooler!
Tinto de verano is a fizzy red wine cocktail which—as its name suggests—is enjoyed copiously in its native Spain, and almost exclusively during the summer. Commonly consumed at outdoor terrace bars and during festivals, it’s a light and fruity mixed drink that originated in Cordoba and quickly spread across the south. You can think of it as a simplified sangria, but Spaniards understand it as the unique stroke of genius it is—and cleverly use it as a way to stay cool in the midst of summer’s oppressive heat, along with the same-but-different kalimotxo.
Note: If a 1:1 ratio of wine to soda is a bit too sweet, club soda can be swapped for some of the lemon-lime soda or added to top off the cocktail.
