What does a Decanter do?

Sommeliers use decanters & carafes similarly to a wine aerator. In other words, decanting wine improves aeration. While it’s generally suggested for red wines like cabernet, any bottle of wine can be improved by some degree of aeration. In addition to breathing life back into the wine, using a glass decanter or carafe will help express the aromas and trap sediment.
