Made In & Nancy Silverton: Behind the Collection

by George Steckel

It's fair to say that Made In’s partnership with Nancy Silverton has been years in the making. When our founders met her at a Food & Wine event a few years back, they did their best to hide their excitement and not embarrass themselves. They very likely failed, Chip and Jake have no chill.

Their paths crossed again at a fundraiser dinner for Ment’or at Bullion, a great friend of Made In’s, in Dallas. Ment’or is a nonprofit organization that fosters excellence and training in aspiring young chefs. Chef Silverton was cooking at the fundraiser and it was there where we got to know her better. Her style, her ways of serving rustic and elegant food, and most of all, her devotion to food and service. A few outfitted restaurants and two new products later and here we are.

When we started to speak with Chef Silverton about products, it was clear that she loved kitchen tools. She told us amazing stories in great detail about all of the knives that she’s seen in her work and we knew right away that a bread knife had to be made. Chef Silverton spoke and we listened. A long blade? Check. Sturdy feel? Check. White handle with beautiful, decorative rivets? Yes, you guessed it. Check. Our bread knife was designed to the exact specifications of one of the the most influential bread makers on the planet. 24 serrated points, two brass rivets with a third decorative one in the middle, a handle made from bone micarta, and it all comes in a box designed by 2x Grammy award nominee and Chef Silverton’s dear friend, Coco Shinomiya.

“When I look at that box, it says this is a box for Nancy Silverton without a doubt.” - Chef Silverton

The handle of this knife and the decorative middle rivet play to Chef Silverton’s style and flair. Like all of Made In’s knives, this bread knife is French-made, full tang, and fully forged. Its blade is nine inches and the total length is 14 inches, for ultimate control. And most important, this knife is just as beautiful as it is essential. Whether you’re slicing your fresh sourdough bread or slicing tomatoes, the 24 points are able to grip onto your food and produce a clean, even cut. The limited edition knife will become available on 10/5. Sign up HERE for first access. Act fast, because once these go, they’re not coming back.
